The Chorizanthe spinosa is a special flowering plant. It is often called the Mojave spineflower. This plant belongs to the buckwheat family. It's quite rare and only grows in one place: California. You can find it mainly in the scrub areas on the western edges of the Mojave Desert.

What is the Mojave Spineflower?

The Mojave spineflower is a unique plant. It can grow either flat on the ground (prostrate) or stand upright. It can reach up to 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) long. The plant often looks grayish and feels a bit hairy.

How Does it Look?

The flowers of the Mojave spineflower grow in groups. These groups can be open or packed closely together. Each tiny flower is surrounded by special leaf-like parts called bracts. These bracts can be green, gray, or even pink.

Flower Details

Usually, each flower has five bracts around it. One of these bracts is much longer than the others. The tips of the bracts have straight, pointy parts called awns. The actual flower in the middle is very small, only about 3 millimeters (a little over 0.1 inch) wide. Most of the time, these tiny flowers are white.
