Mojmir Sepe (born July 11, 1930 – died December 24, 2020), also known by his nickname Mojzes, was a talented musician from Slovenia. He was a composer (someone who writes music), a conductor (who leads orchestras), an arranger (who adapts music), and a trumpeter (someone who plays the trumpet).

Mojmir Sepe's Music Journey

In 1949, Mojmir Sepe finished high school, called a gymnasium, in Celje. After that, he studied piano and trumpet at the Ljubljana Academy of Music.

Starting as a Trumpeter

Mojmir Sepe began his music career in 1950. He was a promising trumpet player for the Radio Ljubljana Dance Orchestra. This was a big band that played popular music.

In 1956, Sepe married a famous Slovenian singer named Majda Sepe. He also started his own jazz band, called the Mojmir Sepe Band. This band was special because it released the very first jazz vinyl record in Yugoslavia.

From Trumpet to Composing

Mojmir Sepe's time as a trumpet player ended after an incident in 1965. After this, he focused on writing and leading music. His new music was greatly influenced by jazz and swing music, which is a lively style of jazz.

He worked with many Slovenian poets. These poets wrote the words for the songs he arranged. Some of them were Frane Milčinski Ježek, Gregor Strniša, Branko Šomen, Miroslav Košuta, and Ivan Minatti.

Song Similarities: "Brez besed" and "Eres tú"

There was a discussion about whether the Spanish song "Eres tú" sounded very similar to the Slovenian song "Brez besed". "Brez besed" was performed by Berta Ambrož and represented Yugoslavia in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. Mojmir Sepe wrote the music for "Brez besed."

Even though some people thought the songs were very alike, Mojmir Sepe never officially complained. Because of this, no further action was taken.

Mojmir Sepe at Eurovision

Mojmir Sepe represented Yugoslavia two times as a composer in the Eurovision Song Contest. This is a big international music competition.
