Moku Manu, which means Bird Island in the Hawaiian language, is a small island located near Oahu. It sits about three-quarters of a mile off the Mokapu Peninsula. Moku Manu and a tiny island next to it are connected underwater by something called a dike.
This special island was created from rock and ash that exploded out of the nearby Kailua Volcano. Moku Manu's highest point is about 202 feet (61.5 meters) tall. Many sides of the island have very steep cliffs.
A Special Bird Sanctuary
Moku Manu is a protected area, just like other nearby islands such as Manana, Kāohikaipu, and Mōkōlea Rock. It is a state seabird sanctuary. This means it's a safe home for many types of seabirds.
Why Birds Love Moku Manu
Because Moku Manu is so isolated, it's a perfect spot for birds to build their nests. It's hard for people or predators to reach the island.
Eleven different kinds of seabirds make their nests on Moku Manu. Several types of migrating shorebirds also visit the island.
Visiting Moku Manu
Even though it's close to Oahu, landing on Moku Manu by boat is almost impossible. There isn't a safe beach where boats can dock. This helps keep the island undisturbed for the birds.
