Molt used to be a very busy farming community. It was located near Yellowstone County. People built several large grain elevators in Molt. These huge structures helped store all the crops grown nearby. Some of these old buildings are still standing today.
The Railroad's Role
A long time ago, the Northern Pacific Railway had a stop in Molt. This train line connected Molt to other towns like Hesper, Wheat Basin, and Rapelje in Montana. The railroad was very important for Molt. It helped farmers send their crops to other places.

How Molt Got Its Name
The first post office in the Molt area opened in 1909. It was first called Stickley and was on a ranch nearby. In 1918, the post office moved into the village. Its name was changed to Molt. The village was named after the person who gave the land for the town to be built.
