Discovering Momona: A Small Town with Big Connections

Momona might be small, but it plays an important role in the region. It's a peaceful community with a few notable facts that make it special.

Momona's Past: Schools and Factories

Like many small towns, Momona once had its own school. Momona School opened its doors in 1899, teaching local children for over a century. It finally closed in 2004.

The town also had a connection to the dairy industry. A cheese factory, originally from nearby Henley, moved to Momona. This factory was run by the Henley Co-operative Dairy Company. It produced cheese for many years before closing in the 1980s.

Home to Dunedin Airport

One of the most important features of Momona is that it hosts Dunedin International Airport. This airport connects the Otago region to other parts of New Zealand and the world. It's a busy hub for travelers and cargo.

When the airport was built, a new area was created for the families of airport workers. The streets in this new part of town were given special names. They honor three brave RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force) airmen. These airmen, James Allen Ward, Lloyd Trigg, and Leonard Henry Trent, all received the Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery given to military members in the British Commonwealth.

New Zealand's Lowest Point

Momona is also home to a unique geographical spot. New Zealand's lowest point is found just southwest of the town. This spot is on Kirk's Drain Road. It sits about 2 meters (6.6 feet) below sea level.

Kirk's Drain Road was named after John Kirk, a local resident. John Kirk was the grandfather of a very important person in New Zealand history. His grandson was the Right Honourable Norman Kirk. Norman Kirk served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1972 to 1974. A Prime Minister is the leader of the country's government.
