Stories About Moncrief Springs

Local stories say that Moncrief Springs was named after a man named Eugene Moncrief. He was a pawnbroker, which means he lent money to people who left valuable items with him as a promise to pay him back. Eugene Moncrief moved to Florida and lived in the area around the spring.

In 1876, people were already talking about Moncrief Springs. Reports from that time said that visiting the springs was good for your health!

Fun at Moncrief Park

In 1903, there were plans to build a fun park at Moncrief Springs. This park would be connected to the city of Jacksonville by an electric streetcar, making it easy for people to visit. Later, in 1921, an ice cream company even started up, named after the springs!

The area around the spring became known as Moncrief Spring Park. One exciting event that happened there was a five-mile race. It was a race between a Cadillac car and one of the very first biplanes to fly in the area!

A Popular Resort

When Peter Jones was the mayor of Jacksonville, a big hotel and resort were built near the spring. This resort offered lots of fun activities. There was a horse track where people could watch races, and even a bowling alley! The resort was popular for many years.

Later, the same location was used as a public swimming pool especially for African Americans. This was during a time when public places were separated by race.

Moncrief Park Neighborhood

Today, Moncrief Park is a neighborhood in Jacksonville. This neighborhood grew up after a short-lived horse racing track that had the same name. A famous horse race called the American Derby was even held at Moncrief Park.

The exact spot of the original Moncrief Springs is not known anymore.
