About the Event
What is the Money in the Bank Ladder Match?
Every Money in the Bank event has a special ladder match. Several wrestlers compete in this match. To win, a wrestler must climb a tall ladder. They then grab a special briefcase hanging high above the wrestling ring.
The winner of this match gets a contract inside the briefcase. This contract lets them challenge for a world championship title whenever they want. For this 2017 event, only SmackDown wrestlers were involved. So, the winner could challenge for SmackDowns top title, which is the WWE Championship. They could not challenge for Raws championship, called the WWE Universal Championship.
On May 23, the boss of SmackDown, Shane McMahon, announced the wrestlers for the men's ladder match. He chose A.J. Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Dolph Ziggler, Sami Zayn, and Baron Corbin. But Kevin Owens was upset. He had beaten A.J. Styles in an earlier event. Kevin felt he should be in the match too. So, Shane McMahon added Kevin Owens to the match.
Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton Match
At an event called Backlash, Jinder Mahal beat Randy Orton. Jinder won his first ever WWE Championship title. He got help from two wrestlers, the Singh Brothers. On the next SmackDown show, Jinder Mahal had a big party to celebrate.
Usually, when a champion loses their title, they get a chance to win it back. This is called a rematch. Shane McMahon came to the ring and said Randy Orton had asked for a rematch. Shane agreed and gave Randy the chance to win his title back.
First Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match
On May 23, on the SmackDown show, several women wrestlers wanted a championship match. Charlotte Flair, Natalya, Tamina, and Becky Lynch all asked Shane McMahon for a match. They wanted to challenge Naomi for her WWE SmackDown Women's Championship.
Shane McMahon decided to have a special match with five wrestlers. The winner of this match would get to face Naomi for her title. But before the match could start, the five women began fighting each other. Shane McMahon then came to the ring. He announced that there would be the first-ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match. The winner would get a contract for a WWE SmackDown Women's Championship match. They could use this contract whenever they wanted.
