Monica Joan Tranel is an American athlete and lawyer. She is best known for her achievements in rowing, where she competed in two Olympic Games. After her sports career, she became a lawyer and later ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Early Life and Education
Monica Tranel grew up in Powder River Country, Wyoming. She attended grade school in different towns like Miles City, Ashland, and Broadview. For high school, she went to Billings Central Catholic High School. There, she was active in sports, playing both basketball and track.
After high school, Tranel continued her education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gonzaga University. Later, she went on to study law at Rutgers University–Camden, where she received her Juris Doctor degree.
Rowing Achievements
Monica Tranel is an accomplished rower. She represented the United States in two Olympic Games. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, she competed in the women's eight-person boat, where her team finished in fourth place.
She also participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics. In this competition, she rowed in the women's single scull races, finishing 12th overall.
Her rowing skills were recognized by the University of Montana. They named one of their special four-seat competition boats "The Tranel" in her honor. This boat is about 40 feet long.
Political Journey
After her career in sports and law, Monica Tranel decided to enter politics. She became a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Montana.
In the 2022 election, she was the Democratic candidate for Montana's 1st congressional district. She ran against Ryan Zinke and John Lamb. During her campaign, American vlogger Hank Green interviewed her in Montana. Tranel did not win the election, receiving 46.5% of the votes.
Tranel ran again in the 2024 election for the same district. She once again faced Ryan Zinke. She received 44.6% of the votes in this election.
Personal Life
Monica Tranel comes from a large family. She has nine siblings. She is also a mother to three daughters.
