Monica Joan Tranel is an American athlete and lawyer. She is known for her skills in rowing, where she competed in the Olympics. Monica Tranel has also run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in Montana.

Early Life and Education
Monica Tranel was born in Big Horn, Wyoming. She grew up in eastern Montana, attending schools in Miles City, Ashland, and Broadview.
She went to Billings Central Catholic High School, where she played basketball and ran track. After high school, Monica Tranel studied at Gonzaga University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later earned her law degree (a Juris Doctor) from Rutgers University–Camden.
Rowing Career
Monica Tranel is a talented rower who competed at the highest levels.
- At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, she finished fourth in the women's eight-person boat race.
- She also competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. There, she placed 12th in the women's single scull races, where one person rows alone.
To honor her achievements, the University of Montana named one of their 40-foot-long, four-seat competition boats "The Tranel."
Political Efforts
Monica Tranel has also been involved in politics, running for a position in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Running for Congress in 2022
In 2022, Monica Tranel was the Democratic candidate for Montana's 1st congressional district. She ran against Ryan Zinke and John Lamb.
During her campaign, a well-known American vlogger named Hank Green interviewed her. Tranel did not win the election, receiving 46.5% of the votes.
Running for Congress in 2024
Tranel ran again in 2024 for Montana's 1st congressional district. She once again ran against Ryan Zinke. She lost this election as well, receiving 44.6% of the votes.

Monica Tranel comes from a large family. She has nine brothers and sisters. She is also a mother to three daughters.
