Monique Mercure (born Marie Lise Monique Émond, November 14, 1930 – May 16, 2020) was a famous Canadian actress. She performed on stage and in movies. Many people thought she was one of Canada's best actors. In 1977, Monique Mercure won a special award at the Cannes Film Festival for her acting. She also won a Canadian Screen Award for her role in the movie J.A. Martin Photographer.

Early Life and Learning

Monique Mercure was born in Montreal, Quebec. Her parents were Eugene and Yvonne Emond. When she was young, her parents made sure she took many classes. She learned how to speak clearly, tap dance, play music, and play the cello.

In 1949, she married a composer named Pierre Mercure. They had three children together. Their daughter, Michèle, also became an actress.

Monique Mercure first studied music and dance. Later, she decided to study acting at St. Lawrence College, Ontario. In 1960, she got her first big acting job. She stepped in to replace another actress in a play called The Threepenny Opera.

Monique Mercure passed away on May 16, 2020. She was 89 years old. She died in Montreal, Quebec, after battling throat cancer. Her daughter, Michèle, shared the news of her passing.

Many important Canadian leaders shared their sadness. This included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He said that Monique Mercure helped show Quebec cinema to the world. He added that her work would always be remembered.
