Monmouth is a small, quiet place in Crawford County, Kansas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a town that doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council. Instead, it's managed by the county.
A Look Back: Monmouth's History
Monmouth was started in 1866. It might even be the oldest town in Crawford County. The founders named it after a town called Monmouth, Illinois.
The first post office opened in Monmouth in July 1866. This was an important step for the community.
The Railroad Era
Monmouth grew quite a bit in 1879. This happened when a special type of train track, called a narrow-gauge railroad, reached the town. This railroad was part of the Memphis, Kansas & Colorado Railroad.
A few years later, in 1882, the tracks were changed to a standard gauge. This meant bigger, more common trains could use them. By 1901, the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway took over the line.
The Frisco Railroad ran both passenger and freight trains through Monmouth. They even had a train station, called a depot, in town. Passenger train service stopped in the late 1960s. Freight trains continued until the 1980s. The entire rail line was finally closed in the early 1990s.
Coal Mining Boom
Monmouth saw a big increase in activity during the 1920s. The town was in the middle of a busy area for coal mining in Southeast Kansas. This brought many jobs and people to the area.
Monmouth Today
Today, Monmouth is a very small community. It has fewer than ten homes. The only building that isn't a house is the Monmouth Trinity Holiness Church.
