History of Monnett
Monnett was started in the 1870s by three brothers: Ephraim, Oliver, and Mervin J. Monnett. They created it as a place to load livestock, like cows, onto trains. This stop was along the Toledo and Ohio Central Railway.
The Monnett family owned a lot of land in Crawford County during the 1860s and 1880s. They shipped so many cattle to cities like Toledo and Chicago that it was easier to send them directly from their land. Setting up Monnett helped them do this.
At one time, Monnett had the Dallas Township School. Later, this school joined with the Mt. Zion School. The United States Postal Service also had a small office in Monnett for mail delivery. For many years, local farmers could also buy supplies at a general store in the community.
Today, the Dallas Township Volunteer Fire Department is located in the center of Monnett.
