History of Mont-Joli
The history of Mont-Joli is closely linked to the railway. In 1867, a railway connection was needed to link New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with the rest of Canada. Work on the Intercolonial Railway began in 1868.
How Mont-Joli Got Its Name
Engineers first planned to build the railway station in Saint-Octave-de-Métis. However, the landscape there was too rough for a train station and maintenance shops. So, they chose a higher, flatter area in Sainte-Flavie instead.
This new train station was first called Sainte-Flavie-Station. In 1880, this area became its own separate place. It was named Mont-Joli, which means "Pretty Mountain" in French. This name was used by the first people who settled there.
Recent Changes to the City
On June 13, 2001, a nearby town called Saint-Jean-Baptiste joined with Mont-Joli. This made Mont-Joli a larger city.
