Monte Barrett (born May 26, 1971) is an American former professional boxer. He competed in boxing from 1996 to 2014. Monte was a heavyweight boxer. He fought for a major heavyweight title in 2006. Throughout his career, he faced many famous and strong boxers.

Monte Barrett's Boxing Journey
Starting as an Amateur Boxer
Monte Barrett had a good start in boxing. He had 40 amateur fights. He won 37 of these fights and lost only 3. After his amateur career, he became a professional boxer in 1996.
Professional Career Highlights
Monte Barrett started his professional career very well. He won 21 fights in a row! His first loss was against Lance Whitaker in 1998.
Winning a Regional Title
After his first loss, Monte won a regional heavyweight title. He fought Phil Jackson for the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight title in 1999. He won that fight.
Facing Tough Opponents
Monte fought many strong boxers. In 2000, he faced Wladimir Klitschko, who later became a world champion. Monte was knocked down several times in that fight. He lost in the seventh round. He also fought Joe Mesi in a close match. Both boxers were knocked down, but Monte lost by a small decision.
Monte then had some big wins. He defeated Dominick Guinn and Owen Beck. The fight against Owen Beck was important. It was an elimination bout, meaning the winner would get a chance to fight for a world title.
Fighting for a World Title
After these wins, Monte fought Hasim Rahman for an interim WBC title. He lost this fight after 12 rounds. Even with this loss, he got a chance to fight for a world title. In October 2006, he fought Nikolay Valuev for the WBA heavyweight title. The fight was in Rosemont, Illinois. Monte was knocked down twice in the fight. His trainer stopped the fight in the eleventh round to protect him.
Later Fights and Retirement
In 2007, Monte lost to Cliff Couser. But he got his revenge in a rematch later that year, winning in the second round. He also knocked out Damon Reed. His last big win was against Tye Fields in 2008, where he won by knockout in the first round.
Monte then faced David Haye in London in 2008. Haye knocked Monte down five times, and Monte lost in the fifth round. David Haye later went on to beat Nikolay Valuev, who had beaten Monte.
Monte continued to fight tough opponents. He lost to Odlanier Solís in 2009 and Alexander Ustinov later that year.
In 2010, Monte had a draw against David Tua. It was a very exciting fight. Monte even knocked Tua down in the final round, which was the first time Tua had been knocked down in his professional career! After this, Monte said he would retire from boxing.
However, Monte decided to come back. He fought Charles Davis to a draw in 2011. Then, he had a rematch with David Tua in New Zealand. On August 13, 2011, Monte defeated David Tua by a unanimous decision. He won the WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental Heavyweight titles.
In 2012, Monte fought Shane Cameron. He said this fight would be a "challenge." Monte lost the fight in the fourth round by knockout. He also lost the titles he had won from David Tua. Monte Barrett's last professional fight was in 2014.
