Montejurra Mountain: A Place of History
Montejurra is more than just a mountain; it has played a role in Spanish history. It is known for a famous battle and for annual gatherings that still happen today.
The Battle of Montejurra
In 1873, a significant event known as the Battle of Montejurra took place on this mountain. This battle was part of the Third Carlist War, which was a conflict in Spain. The Carlists were a group who supported a different royal family for the Spanish throne.
The Montejurra Magazine
For several years, from 1960 to 1971, the Carlists published a monthly magazine. It was named Montejurra, after the mountain that was so important to their cause.
The 1976 Montejurra Incidents
On May 9, 1976, during a time of big changes in Spain called the Spanish Transition, a sad event happened at Montejurra. During a ceremony held by the left-wing Carlist Party, two people were killed. This event became known as the Montejurra Incidents.
Today, the Carlist Party continues to organize an annual gathering at Montejurra. At this event, Carlists and other people who share similar political ideas come together. They honor those who died during the 1976 incidents and remember the mountain's historical importance. In 2004, about 1,000 people attended this gathering.
