Discover Monterey's History
Monterey was first known by a different name: Buena Vista. It was officially created in 1849. The town's current name, Monterey, was chosen to remember the Battle of Monterrey. A post office has been open in Monterey since 1851.
A special building in town, the Monterey Bandstand, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This means it's an important historical place.
