How Monterey Became Part of Roanoke
Monterey was not always part of the city of Roanoke. Originally, this area was included as part of Roanoke County. In 1976, the city of Roanoke officially took over, or annexed, the Monterey area. This meant that Monterey became a part of the city.
From Countryside to Suburbs
Before it was annexed in 1976, Monterey was mostly a rural area. This means it had more open land and fewer buildings, like the countryside. After it became part of the city, Monterey started to grow. Since the 1970s, the neighborhood has changed. It has become more suburban, with more homes and businesses, similar to many towns outside a big city.
