How Did Eastgate Grow?
A long time ago, the area that is now Eastgate was mostly countryside. It was part of Roanoke County. But in 1976, a part of it called Wildwood became officially part of the city of Roanoke. This process is called "annexation," which means a city takes over land from a nearby county. After 1976, Eastgate started to change a lot. Instead of being mostly farms and open land, it began to grow with more houses and buildings. This kind of growth, where towns spread out from a city, is called "suburban" growth. So, since the 1970s, Eastgate has become a suburban neighborhood.
