A Look at Its History
Before Montesclaros became a town, the area was just open land used for grazing animals. It was called Anadinos in Higueruela de las Dueñas.
Montesclaros officially became a populated town in February 1491. This happened thanks to a powerful woman named María de Luna. She was the daughter and a very wealthy heir of a important person called the Constable of Castile, Álvaro de Luna.
María de Luna wanted to make the nearby mountains safer. At that time, there were many robberies and even deaths happening there. To help stop this, she decided to create a new town. She gave fifteen families from a nearby town called Navamorcuende the right to move to Montesclaros and start a new life there. This is how Montesclaros began its journey as a community.
