Monteview is a small, unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Idaho, United States. An unincorporated community means it is a place where people live, but it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Monteview is about 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) north-northwest of Mud Lake. It has its own post office with the ZIP code 83435.

History

The first people to settle in Monteview arrived in 1914. They were "dry farmers," which means they grew crops by relying on rainfall instead of irrigation. After years of bringing in water for drinking and household use, they were very happy to find enough water close to the ground.

Martin Landgren came to Monteview in 1915. He said that at that time, the community had no school, no post office, and no proper roads. After building their homes and starting their farms, the settlers worked together. They built a log structure that served as a school, a church, and a community center for everyone.

A man named Younger built a small two-room house. He then applied to have a post office in the community. The neighbors met to decide on a name for their new community. They narrowed it down to two names: "Mountain View" and "Lincoln." To make the final choice, they asked the school children to decide. The children chose "Mountain View." However, when they sent the name to the post office department, they found out there was already a "Mountain View" in the area. So, they changed the name slightly to Monteview.

Climate

Monteview has a climate with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in January, which is the coldest month, is around 16.2 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8.8 degrees Celsius). In July, the warmest month, the average temperature is about 66.2 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius). The area receives a moderate amount of precipitation throughout the year, with slightly more rain in late spring and early summer.
