Montgomeryshire County War Memorial facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Montgomeryshire County War Memorial is a special monument located on top of Town Hill, near the town of Montgomery in Wales. It was built to remember all the brave people from Montgomeryshire (which is an old county in Wales) who lost their lives in wars.

This memorial was first built to honor those who died in the First World War. Later, it was updated to also remember everyone who died in other wars, including the Second World War.

What is the Montgomeryshire War Memorial?

The Montgomeryshire War Memorial is a tall, impressive column made from a type of white stone called Portland stone. It stands just over 20 feet (about 6 meters) high. The column is built in a classic style called "Doric," which means it has a simple, strong design often seen in ancient Greek buildings.

When Was the Memorial Built?

The construction of this important memorial was finished in 1923. It has stood proudly on Town Hill ever since, reminding people of the sacrifices made during wartime.

How to Visit the Memorial

You can reach the memorial by following a footpath. This path starts across from the car park for Montgomery Castle. The trail goes uphill along a dirt track. Eventually, it leads to a flat, grassy area where you can see the monument in the distance. It's a peaceful spot with great views.

What Does the Memorial Say?

The memorial has special words carved into its stone. The first message, written in English, says: "To the glorious memory of the brave men of Montgomeryshire who fell in the great war 1914–1919." This remembers the soldiers from the First World War.

Messages in Welsh and English

On another side of the memorial, you can find the same message translated into Welsh. Later, more words were added to remember those who "gave their lives" in the Second World War. This shows that the memorial honors all who served and sacrificed.

Why is it a Listed Building?

The Montgomeryshire County War Memorial is also a "listed building." This means it's officially recognized as an important historical building. Being listed helps protect it, making sure it is preserved for future generations to visit and learn from.
