Early Days of Monthalia
By 1868, Monthalia had a church and a masonic lodge. A post office was opened in 1893, which helped the community stay connected. Later, the town even had a school, an auto repair shop, and a butcher shop.
Changes Over Time
As time went on, Monthalia became smaller. Many of its services started working together with residents as a co-op. The local school closed in 1948. The post office also closed in 1968. Both of these services moved to a nearby community called Cost.
