Monthly Review
Title page of the first issue (2nd edition) of the Monthly Review, May 1749.

The Monthly Review was a very old English magazine that was published for a long time, from 1749 to 1845. It was started by a bookseller named Ralph Griffiths. This magazine was special because it was the first in England to offer reviews of books and other writings.

Many famous writers contributed to The Monthly Review. One of the early writers was the novelist and poet Oliver Goldsmith. Ralph Griffiths himself, and probably his wife Isabella Griffiths, also wrote reviews for the magazine. Later, other well-known people like Dr. Charles Burney, Anna Letitia Barbauld, and Tobias Smollett wrote for it. Interestingly, Tobias Smollett later started his own competing magazine called The Critical Review in 1756.

A Long-Running Magazine

The Monthly Review was published for nearly 100 years! It started in May 1749 and continued until December 1844. Over its long history, it was organized into different series of volumes. This shows how popular and important it was for a very long time.

How the Magazine Was Organized

Each issue of The Monthly Review had two main parts. The first part contained longer reviews that went into a lot of detail about important books. The second part was called the "Monthly Catalogue." This section had shorter reviews of smaller works, and these were grouped by different types, like poetry or history.
