A Look Back: Montiel's History
Montiel has a long and interesting history. On March 5, 1227, King Ferdinand III of Castile gave the Estrella Castle to Pedro González Meng. Pedro was the leader, or Grand Master, of the Order of Santiago. This was a group of knights. Because of this gift, Montiel became an important center for the Campo de Montiel lands.
Important Laws and Battles
In 1243, Montiel received special laws called a fuero. These laws were like a rulebook for the town. They also received many special rights from another Grand Master, Paio Peres Correia.
A very important event, the Battle of Montiel, happened right in this town. During this battle, Peter of Castile was killed by Henry of Trastamara. This was a major moment in Spanish history.
Communities in Montiel
For many years in the Middle Ages, Montiel was home to a Jewish community. This community lived there until 1492. At that time, many Jewish people left Spain.
