Montoya is a small, quiet place in Quay County, New Mexico, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement without its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county.

Montoya is located along the famous historic Route 66. This old road was once a major highway across America. One important building here is the Richardson Store. It's so special that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Look at Montoya's History

Montoya started in 1902. It was first a stop for trains and a place to load goods. This was important for moving things around in the early 1900s.

The Kohn Family and T4 Ranch

Around the same time, a family named Kohn helped Montoya grow. Yetta Kohn and her sons, Howard, George, and Charles, started several businesses. They created the T4 Cattle Company ranch. They also opened a store, a bank, and a land company in Montoya.

After Yetta's son Howard passed away, his wife Clara Kohn took over the T4 Cattle Company. She helped the ranch become much bigger. In 1946, they bought part of the Bell Ranch. This made the T4 Cattle Company ranch grow to 180,000 acres.

Today, the T4 Cattle Company ranch is still very large. As of 2023, it covers about 220,000 acres. This makes it one of the biggest private ranches in the United States.

Past Businesses in Montoya

Montoya also had other businesses over the years. A Sinclair gasoline station served travelers from 1925 until the mid-1970s. There is also an old stone building called Casa Alta. This was once the home of Maria and Tylvan Hendren. It is now abandoned.
