Montpelier is a community located in Prince George's County, Maryland, in the United States. It's a suburban area, meaning it's a neighborhood just outside a larger city, Laurel.
This community was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A company called Levitt & Sons designed and constructed the homes. They created four main house styles, and by making mirror images of these, they offered eight different floor plans for families to choose from.
A Look Back in Time
The history of the Montpelier area goes back a long way, to 1685. At that time, it was part of a large piece of land given to Richard Snowden, Sr. by Lord Baltimore.
Richard Snowden arrived in Maryland as an indentured servant. This meant he worked for someone for a set number of years to pay for his trip to America. After his service, he became a very successful landowner.
The Snowden family built a grand house called the Montpelier Mansion. This mansion is still a symbol of their success and importance in the area's history.
How Montpelier is Organized
Montpelier is a special type of community called a Planned Unit Development (PUD). This means it was designed with a specific plan for homes, roads, and shared spaces.
Because it's a PUD, Montpelier has rules and agreements called "covenants and restrictions." These rules were set up in 1998. Their main purpose is to help keep the community looking nice and maintain certain standards for everyone living there.
