The Montpellier – Méditerranée Airport (also known as Aéroport de Montpellier - Méditerranée) is a busy airport in southern France. Its special codes are MPL (for passengers) and LFMT (for pilots). Some people also call it Fréjorgues Airport. It is located about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) east of the city of Montpellier, in a town called Mauguio.

This airport is quite important for France. In 2010, over 1.18 million passengers used it! This made it the 10th busiest airport in France for passenger numbers. A special school for people who want to work in aviation, called the École nationale de l'aviation civile, also has a campus right at the airport.

What is an Airport?

An airport is a big place where airplanes take off and land. It's like a train station for planes! Airports have runways, which are long, flat areas where planes speed up to fly or slow down after landing. They also have terminals, which are buildings where passengers check in, wait for their flights, and collect their luggage.

Airports are very important for travel and trade. They connect cities and countries all over the world. Without airports, it would be much harder and slower to travel long distances.

How Montpellier Airport Works

Montpellier – Méditerranée Airport has two main runways. Runways are like roads for airplanes.

  • The first runway is 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) long. It's made of Asphalt, a strong material.
  • The second runway is 1,100 meters (3,609 feet) long. It's also made of asphalt.

These runways allow many different types of planes to land and take off safely. The airport is open to the public, meaning anyone can use it for travel. It is managed by a company called S.A Aéroport de Montpellier Méditerranée.

Learning About Aviation

Did you know that you can even study aviation at this airport? The École nationale de l'aviation civile (French Civil Aviation University) has a campus here. This university trains future pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aviation experts. It's a great place for young people interested in a career in flying or managing air travel.
