Montserrat Calleja Gómez (born 20 April 1973) is a Spanish physicist. She is an expert in a field called Bionanomechanics. This is where tiny machines and living things meet! She is currently a research professor in Madrid, Spain. She works at the Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology.

Early Life and Discoveries

Montserrat was born in Ourense, a city in Galicia, Spain. She studied Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She earned her degree in 1998.

She continued her studies and got her Master's degree in 2000. Her research focused on using a special microscope called an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). This microscope helps scientists make very tiny designs.

In 2002, she earned her PhD from the same university. She worked with Ricardo García. Her PhD research was about making tiny patterns on silicon surfaces. This work is important for nanotechnology and biosensors. Biosensors are devices that detect biological things, like tiny parts of cells.

After her PhD, Montserrat worked in Denmark. She was a Marie Curie fellow at the Technical University of Denmark. There, she learned how to make very small sensors. These sensors are shaped like tiny diving boards, called cantilevers.

Studying Cells and Cancer

Montserrat led an important project called NANOFORCELLS. The goal of this project was to study how cells work mechanically. She wanted to see if there was a link between cell mechanics and cancer. Understanding this could help find new ways to fight cancer.

From 2008 to 2012, she was in charge of a department at her institute. This department focused on devices, sensors, and biosensors.

Amazing Inventions

Montserrat has invented many cool things. One of her inventions is a nano-mechanical mass spectrometer. This device can weigh individual proteins from cells! Imagine weighing something so incredibly tiny.

She also helped start two companies. These companies are Mecwins SA and Nanodreams SL.

Awards and Recognition

Montserrat Calleja Gómez has received special awards for her work.

  • Miguel Catalán Award (2012): This award is given to researchers in Spain who are under 40 years old. It recognizes their important scientific contributions.
