Monument Draw is the name for two special streams that are often dry. These streams start in New Mexico and flow into Texas. They are named after a place called Monument Springs.

What is an Ephemeral Stream?

An ephemeral stream is a waterway that only flows with water after it rains a lot. Most of the time, these streams are dry. They are like natural ditches or channels that help carry rainwater away. Monument Draw is an example of this kind of stream.

The Two Monument Draws

There are actually two different streams known as Monument Draw. Both of them begin near Monument Springs, which is about 3 miles (4.8 km) west-northwest of Monument, New Mexico.

The Western Monument Draw

One of the Monument Draws starts about 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Monument Springs. This stream flows mostly south. It eventually joins the Pecos River, which is a much larger river in Texas.

The Eastern Monument Draw

The other Monument Draw begins about 11 miles (17.7 km) east of Monument Springs. It is also south of Hobbs, New Mexico. This stream flows generally towards the east and southeast. It connects with another stream called Seminole Draw to form Mustang Draw. Mustang Draw then flows south to become Beals Creek. Finally, Beals Creek flows into the Colorado River of Texas.
