The Moomins (Swedish: Mumintroll) are a family of cute, round, fairy tale characters. They were created by a Finnish writer and artist named Tove Jansson. You can find the Moomins in many books, comic strips, TV shows, and movies.
This special family looks a bit like small hippopotamuses because of their large snouts. They are known for being carefree and loving adventure. Most of the time, the Moomins live in their cozy house in a beautiful place called Moominvalley. They have also lived in a lighthouse and even a theatre during their many exciting adventures. Who Created the Moomins?
The Moomins were brought to life by Tove Jansson (1914–2001). She was a Swedish-speaking Finnish illustrator and writer. Tove Jansson wrote and drew all the original Moomin stories and pictures. Her first Moomin book was published in 1945.
Moomin Books and Comics
Tove Jansson created a total of nine main Moomin books. She also made five picture books, which are great for younger readers. Besides the books, she drew a popular comic strip series. These stories were published between 1945 and 1993. They shared many adventures of the Moomin family and their friends.
Moomins on Screen and Beyond
The Moomins became so popular that they appeared in many different ways.
- Television Shows: Several TV series have been made about the Moomins. These shows helped bring the characters to life for many viewers around the world.
- Movies: There have also been Moomin movies, allowing fans to see their favorite characters on the big screen.
- Theme Park: If you visit Finland, you can even go to a special theme park called Moomin World. It is located in Naantali and lets you step right into the Moominvalley!
