The Moonlite Theatre, also known as the Moonlite Drive-In, is a really cool old drive-in theater located near Abingdon, in Washington County, Virginia. It was built way back in 1949. Imagine watching movies outdoors under the stars!
This theatre still has many of its original parts. These include a huge 65-foot-tall screen tower and its office. There's also the ticket booth where you'd buy your tickets. The concession stand and projector booth building are still there too. And don't forget the bright neon sign by the highway! The theatre has 454 special parking spots. These spots are designed as ramps, so everyone gets a good view of the screen.
History of the Moonlite Theatre
The Moonlite Theatre is a very special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. This is a big deal because it means the theatre is important to history. Not many drive-in theaters get this honor across the country!
In 2013, the Moonlite Theatre closed its doors. People were worried it might be lost forever. But good news came in late 2016! Some people worked together to save it. They started fixing it up and put in a lot of effort and money. Even though the repairs weren't fully done, the theatre reopened. It started showing its classic double features on weekends in October 2016.
The future of the theatre has faced some challenges. Despite this, the Moonlite Theatre remains a historic landmark. It reminds us of a fun way people used to watch movies.
