Moose cheese is a very special type of cheese. It is made using milk from moose. This is quite unusual because most cheeses we know are made from the milk of cows, goats, or sheep. Moose cheese is known for being rare and unique.
Where Moose Cheese is Made
The main place where moose cheese is made is a farm in Bjurholm, Sweden. This farm is called "Älgens Hus," which means "Moose House" or "Elk House." A couple named Christer and Ulla Johansson run this farm. They are thought to be the only people in the world who make moose cheese regularly.
They have three moose that produce milk. These moose are named Gullan, Haelga, and Juno. Because moose are wild animals, it's much harder to milk them than it is to milk cows. This makes the cheese very special and rare. The farm produces about 300 kilograms (around 660 pounds) of moose cheese each year. This cheese is very expensive, costing about US$1,000 per kilogram. This high price is because it's so rare and difficult to make.
Types of Moose Cheese
The Älgens Hus farm makes three different kinds of moose cheese:
- A rind-style cheese: This type has a firm outer layer, like many traditional cheeses.
- A blue cheese: This cheese has blue or green mold veins, giving it a strong flavor.
- A feta-style cheese: This one is similar to Feta cheese, which is often salty and crumbly.

You can try this unique cheese at the Älgens Hus farm's own restaurant in Sweden. It's a special treat for visitors.
Other Producers
While the Älgens Hus farm is the most famous, there have been other attempts to make moose cheese. For example, a cheesemaker named Alexander Fursin from Russia also produced moose cheese under the name GamEat.
