Morden Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in the London Borough of Merton. You can find the church building on Crown Lane, which is part of the Morden one-way road system.
History of Morden Baptist Church
In the 1880s, Morden was a quiet countryside area. It had fields of corn and many cattle. There were three small groups of houses, and each group had a pub at its center. These pubs, "The Plough," "The George," and "The Crown," are still there today.
In 1885, a small group of people who loved Jesus started meeting. They gathered on a Sunday evening in a shop on what is now London Road. They held simple church services where they sang, prayed, and read from the Bible.
Near Morden, a company that built with iron had some sample buildings on display. When they moved away, they offered to sell a chapel made of iron. Queens Road Church in Wimbledon, London decided to buy it for the Morden group.
In 1915, the church had only 16 members. But things changed when the Northern line underground train line was extended. New areas like Merton Park, Morden, and the St. Helier Estate were built. This caused the number of church members to grow to 84.
In 1929, the church moved from the 'Tin Chapel' across the road to a "new" School Hall. This building is still used today for sports, a playgroup, a lunch club, and other activities.
From its small beginnings above a shop in 1885, the church grew quickly. Exactly 50 years later, in 1935, a new church building was needed. This new building was opened on March 9, 1935, to hold the growing number of people.
As Morden changed from a quiet village to a London suburb, the church also grew and changed. In 1990, a big building project took place. This created the modern church facilities you see today. It included a new entrance area, offices, and a sound-proofed room for babies and toddlers. This room has a window looking into the main church.
The church's main entrance now faces up Crown Lane, which is part of the Morden one-way system.
Church Leaders
The current ministers at Morden Baptist Church are Reverend Elaine Youngman and Reverend Darren Powell.
The church also has a 'board' of leaders. These leaders are chosen by the church members for a five-year term. Their job is to guide the church spiritually. They help the church grow and develop, both inside and through its connections with the community. Part of their role is to plan for the future and care for the full-time church leaders.
