The Moreton Bay fig tree in San Diego's Balboa Park is a truly giant tree. It is one of the biggest trees you can find in California. This amazing tree has a long history in the park.

History of the Balboa Park Fig Tree

This huge Moreton Bay fig tree started its life in 1914. It was planted as part of a special event called the Panama–California Exposition. This big fair showed off many cool things, including gardens from different parts of San Diego County.

The Moreton Bay fig tree was part of the San Diego County garden exhibit. It is the only plant from that original exhibit that is still alive today. Imagine, this tree has been growing there for over 100 years!

Protecting the Giant Fig Tree

Over the years, many people wanted to see this famous tree. So many visitors walked around its base that it started to hurt the tree's roots. To keep the tree healthy, the area under it was fenced off in 1989. This helped protect the tree from too much foot traffic. Now, everyone can still admire its size and beauty from a safe distance.
