Morgan Nyberg facts for kids
Everett Wayne Morgan Nyberg, born on March 16, 1944, is a Canadian writer and a teacher of English. He taught English to people who speak other languages. Mr. Nyberg started his teaching career in British Columbia in 1978. He also taught high school in Quito, Ecuador, from 1984 to 1986. Later, he taught in Portugal and the Sultanate of Oman.
Besides teaching, Mr. Nyberg wrote poems in the 1970s. He then started writing fiction in 1980. His first novel, Galahad Schwartz and the Cockroach Army, won a special prize in 1987. This prize was the Governor General's Award for English-language children's literature. It is a very important award for books written for young people.
Growing Up and Learning
Everett Nyberg was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on March 16, 1944. He grew up in the southern part of British Columbia. For his college education, he first went to the University of British Columbia. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966.
He returned to the University of British Columbia later in the 1970s. This time, he became a certified teacher. In 2004, he earned another special diploma. This diploma was in English Linguistics from the University of Central England in Birmingham.
Teaching and Writing Career
Mr. Nyberg began his teaching journey in 1974. He taught creative writing at Douglas College for a year. After working in other jobs, he became a substitute teacher in Vancouver. This was from 1978 to 1982.
From 1982 to 1984, he taught English to people learning it as a second language. He taught at Vancouver Community College. Then, he moved to Quito, Ecuador, where he taught high school English. From 1988 to 1998, Mr. Nyberg taught at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.
In 1998, he moved to the Sultanate of Oman. There, he taught English at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat. He stayed there until he retired in 2010. After retiring, he moved back to British Columbia.
Outside of his teaching, Mr. Nyberg also had a busy writing life. In 1978, he released a book of poems called The Crazy Horse Suite. This collection of poems was even broadcast on CBC Radio in 1982. He then started writing fiction in 1980.
While he was teaching in Ecuador, he kept writing. His book Galahad Schwartz and the Cockroach Army came out in 1987. This children's book won the Governor General's Award for English-language children's literature. He published another book for adults, El Dorado Shuffle, in 1998. In 2011, he released another children's book, Bad Day in Gladland. During the 2010s, Mr. Nyberg continued writing adult fiction. This included Mr. Millennium and The Raincoast Saga, a series about a future world.
