Morgantown is a small community in Charles County, Maryland, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it's not an official town or city with its own local government.
Morgantown is located south of the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge. This bridge crosses the Potomac River near a spot called Lower Cedar Point.
What is Morgantown Known For?
Morgantown is famous for the tall smokestacks of the Mirant Morgantown Generating Station. This is a power plant that helps make electricity. The big chimneys are easy to spot from far away.
A Look Back in Time
Before the current bridge was built in 1940, people used to travel by ferryboat from Morgantown. These boats would carry people and goods across the river to Potomac Beach in Virginia.
A historic building called Waverley is also in Morgantown. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it's an important building with a lot of history.
Recent Developments
In 2007, there was a project to build a new facility near the power plant. This facility was designed to load coal onto large boats called barges. These barges would then travel on Popes Creek. This project caused some discussion and debate in the community.
