Morrison Cohen England Jr., born on December 17, 1954, is a person who used to be a very important judge. He served as a United States district judge for a special court in California. This court is called the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.

Early Life and School
Morrison C. England Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to the University of the Pacific and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. Later, he studied law at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, getting his law degree in 1983. He also served in the United States Army Reserve from 1988 until 2002.
Mr. England's Career Path
Before becoming a judge, Mr. England had many different jobs. In 1973, he worked with computers for the California Department of Motor Vehicles. He even played football as a free agent for the New York Jets in 1976. From 1976 to 1982, he was an assistant football coach at two California State Universities.
He also worked in law, first as a law clerk and then in private practice in California from 1983 to 1988. He was a partner in a law firm called Quattrin, Johnson, Campora & England from 1988 to 1996.
Becoming a Judge
Mr. England started his career as a judge in California. From 1996 to 1997, he was a judge on the Municipal Court in Sacramento County. After that, he served as a judge on the Sacramento Superior Court for the State of California until 2002.
Serving as a Federal Judge
On March 21, 2002, President George W. Bush chose Mr. England to become a United States district judge. This is a very important job in the federal court system. The United States Senate approved his nomination on August 1, 2002. He officially started his new role on August 2, 2002.
He became the Chief Judge of the court on May 1, 2012, and held that position until April 30, 2016. On December 17, 2019, which was his 65th birthday, he took on a new role called "senior status". This means he continued to work but with a reduced caseload. He retired completely from his active service as a judge on October 4, 2024.
Important Decision
On September 19, 2019, Judge England made an important decision. He stopped a California law that would have made people running for president show their tax returns to be on the ballot. This was a temporary order, called a preliminary injunction.
Awards and Special Recognition
In 2013, the University of the Pacific honored Mr. England with the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace and Justice Award.
