The First Building of Lyon College
Morrow Hall was built in 1873. It was the very first permanent building for Arkansas College. Today, this college is known as Lyon College. It is the oldest private college in Arkansas that has been open continuously since it started.
Other Buildings on Campus
When Morrow Hall was built, there were three other important buildings nearby. These were also part of the college campus.
- The Long Memorial Building stood where the Presbyterian church is now.
- A chapel was located between the Long Memorial Building and Morrow Hall.
- A gymnasium was also on the block. This gym has since been changed. It now serves as the Fellowship Hall for the church.
Morrow Hall's Design and Use
Morrow Hall still looks much like it did when it was first built. It was designed as an "academic house." This means it was used for classes and other college activities. The building features a style called Italianate architecture. You can see this in its special pressed tin window trim. It also has a central bay that sticks out from the building. Today, Morrow Hall is used by the First Presbyterian Church.
