History of Morsemere
How Morsemere Got Its Name
Morsemere was named after Samuel Morse. He was the famous inventor of the telegraph. Samuel Morse bought land in this area. He planned to build a home there. However, he passed away before he could finish his dream.
Developing the Community
After Samuel Morse died, his land was divided up. This happened between 1899 and 1902. The area was planned out for new homes and buildings. Around 1910, Morsemere grew a lot. Many more people moved in and new structures were built.
Local Landmarks and Services
The Morsemere Church was finished in 1928. It was named after the community. There was also a local bank called the Morsemere Trust Company. Over time, this bank became part of a larger company called MetroCorp Bancshares.
Before the 1950s, phone calls were made differently. People used "dial telephones." In Morsemere, the local phone number started with "MOrsemere 6." This was a special code for the area.
Morsemere's Train Station
The Erie Railroad had a train line called the Northern Branch. It had a station right in the Morsemere neighborhood. There was also another station nearby in Ridgefield. The Morsemere station building was built when the community was new. Sadly, it burned down in 1928. People could also reach Morsemere by trolley. The trolley came from the 130th Ferry Terminal in Edgewater.
