Where is Mosher?
Mosher is in West Baltimore. Its borders are Edmondson Avenue to the north. Braddish Avenue is on its west side. Poplar Grove is to the east. Riggs Avenue forms its southern boundary. The neighborhood is close to Walbrook Junction and Edmondson Village.
A Look at Mosher's History
Mosher has an interesting past. In the past, different groups of people lived in separate areas. Mosher was mainly home to European Americans. But in the early 1950s, many African American families moved into the area. It then became a community where most residents were African American.
The neighborhood also played a role in stopping a big road project. This project was called the "Road to Nowhere." It was planned to be Interstate 170. But people in Mosher and other neighborhoods worked together. They resisted the road's construction. Today, that area is part of US 40.
The Hebrew Orphan Asylum
One of the oldest and most important buildings in Mosher is the Hebrew Orphan Asylum. It was built in 1876. The building has a special style called Richardsonian Romanesque.
Over the years, this building changed its purpose many times.
- In 1923, it became the West Baltimore General Hospital.
- In 1945, it changed again to the Lutheran Hospital of Maryland.
- The hospital closed in 1989.
- Since 2003, Coppin State University has owned the building.
