Edmondson Village is a neighborhood located in the southwestern part of Baltimore, Maryland. It covers a large area along the Edmondson Avenue corridor. The neighborhood is made up of several smaller communities. These include Hunting Ridge, Uplands, Rognel Heights, Wildwood, West Mulberry, Allendale, Edgewood, and Lower Edmondson Village.

Edmondson Village is situated north of Frederick Avenue. It is also south of the Gwynns Falls Parkway, Leakin Park, and Gwynns Falls Park. The communities within Edmondson Village are home to people from various income levels. A well-known shopping center first opened in this neighborhood in 1947.

The Edmondson Village Shopping Center

In 1947, Joseph and Jacob Meyerhoff built the Edmondson Village Shopping Center. This was a popular place with many features. It had a bowling alley, a movie theater, and lots of free parking. Some of the stores there included Hess Shoes, Food Fair, Tommy Tucker, Whelan’s Drugs, and Hochschild, Kohn & Co. It was a busy spot for shopping and fun.

Changes in the Community

Between 1955 and 1965, the Edmondson Village area saw big changes in its population. This was due to a process called blockbusting. This process involved real estate agents encouraging people to sell their homes quickly. Because of this, some communities in Edmondson Village changed from being mostly White to mostly Black in a very short time, sometimes less than a year.

Education in Edmondson Village

The neighborhood is home to several schools. One of the main schools is Edmondson High School. Other schools in the area include Lyndhurst Elementary, Mary E. Rodman Elementary, and Rognel Heights Elementary/Middle. Thomas Jefferson Elementary/Middle is also located here.

Getting Around: Public Transportation

The Edmondson Village area has public transportation services. These are provided by Baltimore Link, which is run by the Maryland Transit Administration. This helps residents travel easily around the city.

Edmondson Village has been featured in popular TV shows and documentaries.

  • The Wire: Two characters from the HBO show The Wire, Bunk Moreland and Omar Little, grew up in this area. Also, Bubbles' sister lived in Edmondson Village, and Bubbles stayed in her basement for a while.
  • The Keepers: The Edmondson Village Shopping Center was shown in the 2017 Netflix documentary series The Keepers. This series was about the disappearance and murder of Catherine Cesnik.
