Moss Ledge is a famous old vacation home, known as an Adirondack Great Camp. It was designed by an architect named William L. Coulter in 1898. The camp was built for Isabel Ballantine, whose family was well-known in New York City. Her grandfather, John Holmes Ballantine, owned a big brewery in Newark.

About Moss Ledge

Moss Ledge was one of the first big projects for William L. Coulter. He had moved to Saranac Lake hoping to get better from a serious lung illness called tuberculosis. The camp is located on Upper Saranac Lake. It is close to two other large camps that Coulter also designed: Prospect Point Camp and Eagle Island Camp.

What Makes It Special

The camp gets its name from a rocky, moss-covered spot nearby. This spot is still a noticeable feature along the lake's edge. Moss Ledge includes several buildings. There is a main lodge, a guest house, a dining hall, and a boat house. A little further away, there is also a tea house. This tea house sits on a high point overlooking the lake.

The buildings are made from logs that still have their bark. Some are built like traditional log cabins, with logs notched together. Others have wood shingles over plank walls. The style of Moss Ledge is much like Camp Pinebrook, which was another one of Coulter's designs.

History of the Camp

In 1948, Moss Ledge was given to Syracuse University. Later, it was sold and is now owned by private individuals.

Moss Ledge was recognized as an important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This means it is protected because of its special history and design.
