Mosteiro de San Salvador de Lérez
The Monastery of Saint Benedict of Lérez, a historic building in Pontevedra, Spain.

The Monastery of Saint Benedict of Lérez (in Spanish: Monasterio de San Salvador de Lérez) is a beautiful old monastery located in the city of Pontevedra, in the region of Galicia, Spain. It sits on a hill next to the Lérez River, offering amazing views of the city and the surrounding nature. For centuries, it was home to Benedictine monks and was a very important center for learning and culture.

History of the Monastery

The story of the Lérez Monastery is long and fascinating, stretching back over a thousand years. It has seen many changes, from its early days as a small religious house to becoming a powerful and influential monastery.

When Was the Monastery Founded?

The first records of a religious community at Lérez date all the way back to the year 915. This means the monastery is over 1,100 years old! At first, it was a small and simple place. However, it grew in importance when it was given to the Benedictine Order in the 11th century. The Benedictine monks were known for their dedication to prayer, work, and study.

Under the Benedictines, the monastery became a major center of power and knowledge in Galicia. The monks managed large areas of land, collected taxes, and ran a school. This school was famous for teaching philosophy and theology (the study of religion).

A Time of Change and Rebuilding

Like many old buildings, the monastery has been rebuilt and changed over the centuries. The church you can see today was built in the 18th century. It was designed in a grand style called Neoclassical, which was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture.

Sadly, in 1835, the Spanish government passed a law that closed down many monasteries, including this one. The monks had to leave, and the building and its lands were sold. For many years, the monastery was abandoned and fell into ruin. The church, however, was saved and became the local parish church.

What Does the Monastery Look Like?

The Monastery of Lérez is known for its stunning architecture and beautiful location. The most important parts are the church and the remains of the old cloister.

The Impressive Church

The church of San Salvador is the main feature of the monastery today. Its front wall, or façade, is very impressive. It has a large, rounded arch over the main door and is decorated with simple but elegant stone carvings. Above the entrance, there is a large window that lets light into the church. The façade is topped by two tall bell towers.

Inside, the church has a floor plan shaped like a Latin cross. The most spectacular part is the large dome over the center of the church, which is decorated with beautiful paintings. The main altarpiece, a large decorated screen behind the altar, is also a masterpiece of Baroque art.

The Old Cloister

A cloister is a covered walkway around an open courtyard, which was the heart of a monastery. It was a place where monks could walk, pray, and study in peace.

Unfortunately, only one side of the original cloister of Lérez survives today. It gives us a small glimpse of what the monastery was like in its golden age. The rest of the monastic buildings were torn down after the monastery was closed in the 19th century.

The Monastery's Beautiful Surroundings

One of the best things about the Monastery of Lérez is its location. It is set in a peaceful, natural park overlooking the Lérez River. This area is a popular spot for locals and visitors to go for a walk, have a picnic, and enjoy the fresh air.

A famous festival, the Romería de San Benitiño de Lérez, is held here every year on July 11th. It is one of the most popular festivals in Pontevedra. Thousands of people come to the monastery to pray, enjoy music and food, and celebrate together. It is a day full of tradition and fun.
