Motty Steinmetz (full name: Yisrael Baruch Mordechai Steinmetz) is a well-known singer in the Hasidic Jewish community. He sings religious Jewish songs.
About Motty Steinmetz
Motty Steinmetz was born in 1992 in Bnei Brak, Israel. He grew up in a Vizhnitz family, which is a group within the Hasidic Jewish community. He is one of nine children born to Rabbi Moshe and Rebecca Steinmetz.
When Motty was 14, his grandfather moved to Israel from Antwerp, Belgium. His grandfather taught him many old Vizhnitz songs. These songs greatly shaped Motty's own musical style.
As a teenager, Motty was discovered by a music producer named Ruvi Banet. Ruvi later became Motty's manager. Motty sings religious Jewish songs, often using words directly from holy texts or prayers. People know him for the deep emotion he puts into his music.
Motty follows strict Jewish modesty rules. Because of this, he only performs for audiences of men or for audiences of women. If both men and women are present, there must be a special divider called a mechitza between them. He has also visited hospitals to sing for people who were recovering from accidents.
In 2017, Motty released his first album, Haneshama Bekirbi. Important leaders, like the Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau, attended the album launch. It took four years to create this album. It became very popular in Israel, earning a "platinum" award for selling many copies.
In 2018, an Israeli TV channel called Kan 11 made a special show about Motty's life and music.
In 2019, Motty was part of a discussion about concerts that separate men and women. He was supposed to perform in Afula for an audience that would be separated by gender. Some people disagreed with this. A court first suggested having a mixed-gender area too. However, a women's group challenged this in a higher court. The higher court decided that separating the audience was not allowed, but the concert was already ending when the decision was made. Motty said he found the whole situation "infuriating." He received support from some religious politicians. After this, a concert in Haifa that was only for men was stopped by judges.
Motty's Family Life
When Motty was 23, he met his wife, Malka Weisel. They were introduced by a matchmaker, someone who helps people find partners. Malka's father is a respected rabbi.
Motty and Malka got married in 2015. Another famous Hasidic singer, Mordechai Ben David, was a guest at their wedding. In 2017, they welcomed their first daughter, Esther. In 2020, they had another daughter.
