List of cities in Israel facts for kids
This article is about the 73 places in Israel that are officially called cities by the Israeli government. These cities are recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Interior, which is a government department. For a place to become a city, its population usually needs to be more than 20,000 people.
This list does not include four Israeli settlements in the West Bank that are also called cities. However, East Jerusalem is included as part of Jerusalem. The international community generally views East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory under Israeli occupation.
Cities in Israel
Israel has 16 cities with more than 100,000 people. These include important cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Yafo. In total, 77 places in Israel have "city" status. This number includes four Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Two new cities are also being planned: Kasif in the Negev desert, and Harish, which is growing from a small town into a large city.
The area and population of Jerusalem include East Jerusalem. Israel has added East Jerusalem to Jerusalem's city limits under the Jerusalem Law. However, many countries around the world do not agree with this. If East Jerusalem is counted, Jerusalem is Israel's largest city with about 919,000 people. Tel Aviv is the second largest with 452,000 people. If East Jerusalem is not counted, Tel Aviv is the largest city.
The table below lists many Israeli cities. It shows their name, the district they are in, when they were first settled, their population, and their area.
