Motul is a city in the Mexican state of Yucatán. Its full name is Motul de Carrillo Puerto. The name "Motul" comes from the Mayan language. It means "the 'mut' bird" or "knot."

Motul's Rich History
Motul was once an important place for the Maya civilization. It was founded around the 11th century (the 1000s). A priest named Zac Mutul is said to have started the city.
The Pech family ruled Motul for many years. After the main Mayan government in Mayapan fell apart in the 1440s, the Pech family created their own kingdom. This kingdom was called Cehpech, and Motul was its capital.
Spanish Arrival and Colonial Times
Later, Francisco de Montejo led the Spanish conquest of Yucatán. Motul then became a Spanish colonial town. You can still see a old Franciscan monastery from that time. This monastery has interesting frescos, which are paintings on walls.
Motul officially became a city on February 22, 1872.
Honoring Felipe Carrillo Puerto
Motul is the birthplace of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. He was a governor of Yucatán who worked for social justice. Sadly, he was killed in 1924. To remember him, the city's official name was changed to Motul de Carrillo Puerto.
Motul is also well-known as the home of huevos motuleños. This popular egg dish is a favorite in Yucatán.
Where Motul Is Located
Motul is in the central part of the Yucatán State. It shares borders with several other towns. To the north, it borders Telchac Pueblo and Dzemul. To the south, it borders Cacalchén. Cansahcab is to the east, and Baca is to the west.

Motul has many interesting customs and traditions. The "guilds" are a big part of these celebrations. Guilds are like groups of people who share a common job or interest.
