The Moultonborough Town House is a very old building in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. It used to be the town hall, which is like the main office for the town's government. Today, it is home to the local historical society, where people can learn about the town's past.
This historic building was built way back in 1834. That makes it one of the oldest town hall buildings in Carroll County. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It also joined the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2004.
What Does the Town House Look Like?
The Moultonborough Town House is located on New Hampshire Route 25, right in the center of the village. It's a single-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof, and its outside walls are covered with wooden boards. The building sits on a strong stone foundation.
The front of the building has two main doors in the middle. On either side of the doors, there are windows that can slide up and down. The windows and doors have small decorative ledges above them. The inside of the building has one big room. This room is decorated with wooden panels on the lower part of the walls. There's also a small kitchen area and restrooms in a section added to the back.
A Look at Its Long History
The Moultonborough Town House was built in 1834. For many years, it was the main place where town meetings were held. People would gather here to make important decisions about their community. It served as the town hall until 1949. After that, town meetings moved to a school auditorium.
In 1960, the building got a new purpose. It became the home of the Moultonborough Historical Society. This group works to preserve and share the history of Moultonborough. Over the years, the building has had some changes, but its original charm remains. An old schoolhouse from the area was even moved to this property in 1987, adding to its historical importance.
