Mount Alvernia is a special place on Cat Island in the beautiful country of The Bahamas. It used to be called Como Hill. This small mountain is famous because it is the highest point in all of the Bahamas!

Mount Alvernia stands at about 63 metres (207 ft) above the sea. That's like climbing to the top of a 20-story building! From its peak, you can see amazing views of the island and the sparkling blue ocean.

What's in a Name?

Mount Alvernia got its name from a famous hill in Tuscany, Italy, called La Verna. This Italian hill is important in history because it's where Saint Francis of Assisi had a very special experience.

People chose the name Mount Alvernia for this Bahamian peak to honor that historical place. It gives the mountain a sense of history and spiritual meaning.

The Hermitage

At the very top of Mount Alvernia, you'll find a small, unique building called The Hermitage. This interesting structure was built by a man known as Father Jerome. He was a priest and architect who came to Cat Island.

Father Jerome built The Hermitage by hand, using stones from the island. It's a quiet place where people can go to reflect and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The Hermitage looks like a tiny monastery or a small castle.

Why is it Important?

Mount Alvernia is important for a few reasons. First, it's the highest natural point in the entire country of the Bahamas. This makes it a significant landmark.

Second, The Hermitage at its summit is a popular spot for visitors. It shows the unique history and culture of Cat Island. Many people enjoy hiking up to the top to see the views and explore the historic building.
