Mount Aventine is a historic farm and special area located by the Potomac River in Bryans Road, Maryland. It is found in Charles County, Maryland. This place is important because it shows how people lived and farmed long ago.

The main building at Mount Aventine is a large brick house. It was built in the early 1800s. The house has a style called Greek Revival. This means it looks like ancient Greek temples, with grand columns and simple shapes. Around 1860, the house was made even bigger. It became a two-and-a-half-story building with five sections across the front.

What You Can Find at Mount Aventine

The Mount Aventine property has many interesting old structures. Besides the main house, there is a smokehouse from the 1800s. A smokehouse was used to preserve meat. You can also find old farm buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. These include a dairy barn complex built around 1900.

The property also has old roads and a family cemetery. This cemetery is where members of the Chapman family are buried. They owned Mount Aventine for a very long time. There are also places where an old fishing business used to be. An even older house from the 1700s once stood here too.

History of Mount Aventine

The Chapman family owned the land at Mount Aventine from 1751 until 1916. They ran a ferry service across the Potomac River. This ferry was very important. It helped connect people and goods between Northern Virginia and Maryland.

During the American Civil War, Mount Aventine played a role. The house once had a small tower called a cupola. The United States government used this cupola as a signal station. They sent messages from there during the war.
