How Was Mount Cantello Discovered and Named?

Scientists and explorers have been mapping Antarctica for many years. Mount Cantello was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey. This mapping happened between 1960 and 1965. They used information from surveys and also from air photos taken by the United States Navy.

The mountain was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to name it after Dominic Cantello, Jr.. He was an electrician with the United States Navy and worked at the South Pole Station in 1965. Naming mountains after people who helped explore or work in Antarctica is a way to honor their contributions.
