Mount Carmel is a small community in Clermont County, Ohio, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 4,828 people lived here.

History of Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is one of the oldest places in Union Township. In 1788, a surveyor named John Obannon and his team arrived. They came to prepare the land for new homes and businesses. At that time, many Revolutionary War soldiers lived there. They received land as payment for fighting in the war. This land could be hundreds of acres!

Early Settlers and the "Father" of Mount Carmel

A pioneer named John Rose came from New Jersey in 1796. He was one of the first people to settle in Mount Carmel. Many people consider him the "father" of the community. Today, the only sign of him is a small graveyard where he is buried. It's located on Rose Hill, near Hamilton County. Some historians believe Rose might have chosen the name "Mount Carmel" from the Bible.

Grape Industry in Ohio

The Catawba grape was very important to the Ohio River Valley. This type of grape could survive the cold Ohio winters. Farmers in Mount Carmel and nearby areas grew many grapes. They built grape arbors, which are structures to support grapevines, all over Union Township. By 1860, Ohio was the top state in the country for making wine!

Post Office Changes

In 1887, a post office was built for Mount Carmel. However, it was just outside the town's official limits. So, a new area called "East Mount Carmel" was created to include it. After a few years, this post office was renamed Summerside, Ohio. Later, the Summerside and Glen Este post offices closed. Their services moved to Newtown, which is farther west. Recently, the Newtown office also closed. Now, the closest post office is on Nagel Road in Anderson Township.
